Your catalog description should be a single paragraph of no more than 150 words. Include the content, theme, and goals of the course. Describe the class format (lecture, discussion, film, etc.), prerequisites if appropriate, and what is expected of participants. Frustrated by the word count? Keep in mind that you can include additional information on your website, which can be made available to prospective SGMs during the course sign-up period. Please don't include web links, class size, outside preparation, or contact information here. Note that the Curriculum Committee may make minor editorial changes to your text in accordance with current style guidelines for the HILR catalog.
Please estimate the average number of hours per week of outside preparation required of study group members. Please try to be realistic. Enter a whole number from 1 to 4 (no fractions, please).

Books (for catalog)
Please list each title separately. Please check that the books you wish to use for this course are available in sufficient numbers and at a reasonable price from Amazon or other book dealers.

List editors and translators with the author(s), e.g. André Gide, trans. Dorothy Bussy.

Please mark "Only this edition" with an "x" if it is important that study group members are reading from exactly the same edition. Leave it blank if any edition will do.

In a sentence or two, please provide a general description for SGMs of any additional required materials for reading or viewing (e.g video subscriptions). If you will be making any of these additional required materials available, please indicate that but do not list specific titles. For that, please follow the format of this example:

“Additional readings from the popular and medical literature will be posted on the course website.” Please limit your description to about 50 words. No web links here, please.
To help the Committee understand your proposed course, you may wish to provide here a brief outline or a preliminary syllabus. You can also tell us here about any significant use you intend to make of online materials or PowerPoints slides in class sessions.

Biographical Statement (for catalog)

In a sentence or two, please provide a brief statement to help prospective participants understand how your background relates to the course. Start with your full name and refer to yourself in the third person. Emphasize your education only as related to the subject of your course.

Please DO NOT include your email or telephone number here. They cannot be included in the catalog.

Limit: 25-40 words in one paragraph (for each SGL).

Schedule

What days and times can you offer your course? SGLs are expected to provide at least three options. Additional flexibility is much appreciated. (In addition to selecting a fourth option, you can indicate additional options below in Further Scheduling Information.) If you cannot provide at least three scheduling options, please explain in Further Scheduling Information (understanding that fewer than three options may impact the Director’s ability to schedule the course). We anticipate a Zoom Monday AM again in Fall 2025. Please take this likelihood into consideration when selecting your scheduling options. If you would offer your course only if on Zoom, indicate that in Further Scheduling Information.

Please indicate any additional availabilities beyond your top three choices. If you have listed fewer than three options, explain here (understanding that fewer than three options may impact the Director’s ability to schedule the course).

Class Size & Special Requests

What is your preferred class size?
Class Size*
Please choose the maximum number of students you'd prefer for your class. If your course is accepted and scheduled, its size limit, which may vary somewhat from your request, will be included with your scheduling notification from the HILR Director.

Please explain how your course content and planned approach would lend themselves to one of the small rooms. The smaller classrooms (G20, 118, and 307) hold 12 or 13 students and one Study Group Leader. Study groups with co-leaders should not select a limit of 12 because the space is too limited in these rooms. The smaller rooms are good for discussion and have projectors, but are poor for movies or extensive use of slides because of the seating arrangements.

Colloquium Room LEGACY NOT USED
The Colloquium Room can often be used as a classroom and has good AV facilities. Please indicate how well your seminar would work in the room.
If you have a preference for a specific kind of room, indicate that here. While specific room types cannot be guaranteed, your preference will be taken into consideration when creating the schedule and setting your class size. (Please note: the more scheduling flexibility you have, the greater the chance your request can be accommodated. Now—not after the course has been approved and scheduled—is the time to indicate any such request.)
What else should the Committee know about your proposal? You can also indicate here what assistance might be helpful to you. Note that information regarding your scheduling preferences should not be included here (see Further Scheduling Information above.)

Thank you for preparing your course proposal. If you are not finished preparing it, press the "Save and Continue Later" button. To send it to the Curriculum Committee, press the "Submit" button.

After you Submit your proposal, you will receive a confirmation email that includes the text of your submission. Please keep that message for your reference. Your committee sponsor will be in contact with you within a few days.

Do not resubmit this proposal. Please contact the Curriculum Committee if you have changes or questions.
